Before planting, soak the bulbs in lukewarm water for 1–3 hours to rehydrate them and encourage growth.
Plant the bulbs
Plant the bulbs 2–3 inches deep and 6–9 inches apart. You can plant them in full sun.
Consider the pot
If you’re planting in a container, use a pot with adequate drainage holes to prevent the bulbs from rotting in waterlogged soil. For Mediterranean anemones, use a free-draining compost mix with added sharp sand or perlite.
Plant potted anemones
Plant potted anemones as soon as you can, and water them thoroughly.
Harvest for cut flowers
For the longest vase life, harvest anemone flowers when the top leaf collar is ½–¾ inch down from the flower head.
You can also pre-sprout anemones to make them bloom a few weeks earlier. To do this, you can:
Fill a flat-bottomed seed tray halfway with moist potting soil.
Place the corms in the tray and cover with more soil.
Move the tray to an area with a consistent temperature of 40–50°F for two weeks.
Check the corms every 3–4 days to ensure the soil is moist, and remove any that show signs of rotting or molding.
Plant the corms once rootlets appear.
