To grow ixia bulbs, you can follow these steps:
1. Plant in spring
Plant ixia bulbs in spring in a location that’s protected from frost, like a greenhouse or windowsill. You can also plant them directly outside after the risk of frost has passed.
2. Choose a pot or garden location
If you’re planting in a pot, pick one with drainage holes and place it in a spot with full sun to part shade. If you’re planting in the garden, choose a sunny, sheltered location.
3. Plant the bulbs
Plant the bulbs 5–15 cm deep, with the pointed side facing up. Space them 10–15 cm apart.
4. Water
Water well after planting to settle the soil. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the growing season.
5. Feed
When flower buds appear, feed the plant every 1–2 weeks with a liquid plant food.
6. After flowering
Once flowering has finished, stop watering and let the foliage die off. You can lift the bulbs from the soil and store them in a cool, dry place for the next season.
