Grow Oriental Lilies From Bulbs

When to plant
Plant in spring in well-drained soil that’s enriched with compost. You can also plant from October to April.

Where to plant
Oriental lilies prefer a cooler, sheltered spot with some afternoon shade and protection from strong winds. They can grow in full sun, but they may need protection from hot sun and winds.

How to plant
Plant the bulbs 6–8 inches deep, with the flat side down and the pointy end up. Space them 8–12 inches apart in the garden, or no more than 3 per 12-inch pot.

Soil
Oriental lilies grow best in acidic soil or ericaceous compost. The soil should be well-drained and rich in organic matter.

Watering
Water generously after planting, and then water as needed to keep the plant moist but not soggy. Deep watering less frequently is better than frequent, light watering.

Fertilizing
Apply a high-potassium liquid fertilizer every two weeks from planting until six weeks after flowering.

Staking
Taller varieties may need staking to support the stems, especially in open areas.

Protecting
Protect all types of lilies from lily beetle. You can also put a tube cage around them to keep out bunnies.

After flowering
Allow the foliage to die down naturally after flowering.

Oriental lilies are a type of lily that are native to Asia and are known for their large, fragrant flowers.
