How To Grow Tulip Bulbs

When to plant
In the Northern Hemisphere, plant tulip bulbs before the end of October .

Where to plant
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil that has a pH between 6 and 7. In the South, tulips can tolerate partial shade.

How to plant
Dig a hole that’s about three times as deep as the bulb and place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end facing up. Space the bulbs 4–6 inches apart.

Watering
Water the bulbs immediately after planting. Bulbs need water to start growing, but they don’t like too much moisture.

Fertilizing
Apply fertilizer before planting and again in early spring when the leaves start to emerge.

Mulching
Mulch can help retain moisture and keep the soil cool. Cover the area with 2–3 inches of mulch.

Soil improvement
Add compost to improve sandy or clay soils.

Planting in containers
If planting in containers, you can plant the bulbs closer together.
