Mariachi features extra-double, large flowers that resemble camellia flowers. The high quality quadruple flower has a perfect form for mixed or straight bouquets. This series produces excellent rose-shaped flower heads with thick petals for long lasting shelf life and easy transportation. Mariachi flowers are 2 – 2.75 inches/5 – 7 cm in diameter on plants with heights of 30 – 38 inches/76 – 96 cm. Mariachi is suitable for winter sowing and early spring to summer harvest.
1. Understand your plant
Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum) is slow-growing — from sowing to bloom takes 5–6 months.
The Mariachi series is a high-quality F1 hybrid with large, double flowers and strong stems.
Seeds are pelleted (tiny seeds coated for easier handling) — treat them gently.
—
2. Prepare the seed starting mix
Use a fine, sterile, well-draining seed-starting mix — peat moss or cocopeat with perlite/vermiculite is ideal.
Avoid heavy soil — lisianthus seedlings hate soggy conditions.
Pre-moisten so the mix is evenly damp, not wet.
—
3. Fill and level your trays
Use plug trays or shallow seed trays — 128-cell or 288-cell plug trays are ideal for professional results.
Gently level the surface for even sowing.
—
4. Sow the seeds
Do NOT bury — lisianthus needs light to germinate.
Place one pellet per cell with tweezers or a damp toothpick.
Press lightly to ensure contact with the soil surface.
—
5. Mist to settle
Use a fine spray to moisten pellets.
Avoid overhead heavy watering — it can break the pellet too roughly.
—
6. Provide ideal germination conditions
Temperature: 21–24 °C (70–75 °F) during the day, 18–20 °C (64–68 °F) at night.
Light: Bright light (12–14 hrs/day) — grow lights are best.
Humidity: Cover with a clear humidity dome to prevent drying out.
Airflow: Vent daily to avoid mold.
—
7. Germination time
Sprouts appear in 10–15 days (sometimes up to 20).
Once germinated, remove humidity cover and maintain bright light.
—
8. Seedling care
Keep the mix moist but not soggy.
Maintain cooler temps after germination: 18–21 °C (65–70 °F) to avoid stretching.
Feed weekly with a dilute balanced fertilizer (e.g., 1/4 strength 20-20-20 or similar).
Grow slowly — don’t rush with too much heat or fertilizer.
—
9. Transplanting
When seedlings have 3–4 sets of true leaves, transplant into larger pots or directly into the garden.
Space 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart in full sun.
Soil should be fertile, well-drained, and slightly alkaline (pH 6.5–7.2).
